The best acne stickers

TKTK makes one thing: hydrocolloid patches for pimples. A patch is a thin sticker of hydrocolloid, the same gel-forming material used in blister plasters. It covers the spot, absorbs fluid from it and keeps your fingers away while it does.

Most of our patches are plain hydrocolloid with nothing added. A few packs list extra ingredients on the box: tea tree and calendula oil in the classic dots, salicylic acid in the Invisible+ and Microdart patches. Every box lists what is inside.

Every patch comes on a clear sheet, and each sheet holds one size or one shape. You peel a patch by its edge, press it over the spot and leave it alone. When the patch has filled, its centre turns white, and that is the sign to change it.

Why TKTK patches come in so many sizes

A patch works only where it touches. If the spot is wider than the patch, the edge lifts and the patch comes off in your sleep. So every TKTK pack holds several sizes, and the smallest dot starts at 8 mm.

The Large+ line goes further. It adds 60 x 20 mm strips for a row of spots and 45 mm and 60 mm squares for the back and chest. Some shapes are cut for one place: a strip for the nose, a crescent for the chin, a moon for the curve beside the nose. For anything else there is a hydrocolloid roll you cut yourself.

Counts are large on purpose. A box of several hundred patches costs a few cents per patch, so you can use a fresh one each night without counting. The price per patch stands next to every pack size.

Shape matters as much as size. A dot sits flat on a cheek, but it lifts on the fold of the nostril or the curve of the chin. That is why the shaped TKTK patches exist, and why our size chart draws all of them to one scale.

The invisible patches taper to an outer edge of 0.01 cm, the figure printed on their boxes, and they come in 10, 12 and 15 mm.

What a pimple patch can and cannot do

A hydrocolloid patch is at its best on a spot that has come to a head or has already opened. It has little to draw from a deep bump under the skin, and it does not empty blackheads. Dermatologists say the same, and we would rather you knew before you buy.

Patches are also not a treatment plan. If breakouts keep coming back, are deep or painful, or leave marks, see a board-certified dermatologist. A patch is what you reach for on the day a spot appears.
